Upcoming Fall Vehicle Maintenance

You may think fall isn’t an important time of the year to be performing any maintenance, but it’s better to complete this checklist while the weather is still mild. With autumn’s shorter days, cooler temperatures and inclement weather drawing closer, now is a good time to get your car ready for the demands of the coming driving season.

10 practical tips to help get your car ready for fall:

1. Check your oil level, and add oil if necessary; it’s even better if you perform an oil and lube job. Be sure to use a multi-grade viscosity oil for winter driving.
2. Inspect your windshield wipers. Bitter cold, snow and ice are hard on their rubber blades. You can find blades designed for winter at Consumer Auto Parts stores. Be sure to watch for special sales on windshield wiper blades during winter!
3. Fill your windshield wiper reservoir with the proper type of windshield fluid for your climate, to avoid your windshield wiper fluid freezing in a big storm.
4. Look at the level and condition of your engine coolant. If the level is low, add antifreeze. If the condition looks poor, do a flush-and-fill.
5. Have someone evaluate your belts and hoses. Check all of belts and hoses for fraying, cracking or leaking, and if you find any be sure to replace them.
6. This would be the best time to consider a tune up, especially if you haven’t had one within the past 25,000 miles.
7. Inclement weather and associated road conditions and other hazards require good stopping power. If the tires have wear bars showing, say the experts, you need to replace the tires. Also check the tire pressure, as tire pressure drops when the outside temperatures plummet. Keep the pressure at levels recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
8. (optional) Apply high-grade car wax to your vehicle’s exterior to help protect it from the possible onslaught of snow, ice, sleet and freezing rain. It will also help avoid the salt from ruining the paint on your car. ( You may also find this in any of our Consumer Auto Parts locations)
9. It doesn’t hurt to get a winter survival kit consisting of : Jumper cables, flares, ice scrapers, road salt, flashlights, flares.
10. Lastly having a first aid kit with blankets, snacks, band-aids, gauze just in case of any medical emergencies.

Is your vehicle ready for the heat? Check your cooling system! The cooling system in your vehicle is your engine’s front line of defense when it comes to the ongoing battle against heat. If you properly maintain your vehicle’s cooling system and take a few other preventative measures, you’re ensuring that your engine won’t experience the added stress of operating under extreme high temperatures. But how do you keep your truck’s engine running cool under most normal driving conditions? Is there anything that you can do to prevent your vehicle from overheating? What types of products help keep your vehicle running nice and cool?

The easiest step to keeping your engine cool is checking your gauges! Locate your vehicle’s temperature gauge, pay attention to what the gauge displays as a normal operating temperature for your engine. The easiest way to do this is to simply take a mental note of the reading on several different occasions after the vehicle’s engine has had a chance to run for a while. If your engine’s cooling system is operating properly, you’ll find that the temperature should remain fairly stable or at least consistently fall within a certain range. If you see the temperature reading begin to increase rapidly, you may have a problem. Ignoring it won’t make it go away, either. It’s wise to diagnose and repair an engine cooling issue as soon as possible. If the worst case scenario plays out, you just may be able to avoid a potentially catastrophic engine failure. As you could probably guess, major engine repair or even replacement isn’t cheap.

Checking your vehicle’s coolant levels, and making sure you are using the proper coolant is also very important. Your vehicle’s cooling system doesn’t operate on coolant alone. In fact, your vehicle’s cooling system actually requires a mixture of coolant and water to provide just the right level of protection for your engine. If you skew the manufacturer’s suggested coolant-to-water mixture by adding only water or adding only coolant, you could risk damage to your vehicle’s engine. Get your vehicle ready for Spring!

It’s time to pack away all those winter coats, and unpack the bathing suits. Just like spring cleaning around the house, your vehicle requires the same type of treatment. After months of salty roads, and hard cold starts; your vehicle deserves a fresh start. Before you take off on that long weekend getaway this spring, make sure your car will get you there safe.

First thing to do is get all that salt and grim off your car. Road salt can damage your vehicles paint, and undercarriage. Scrub away all that grim with a quality soap, and apply a fresh coat of wax. Make sure you get under the vehicle with a hose and break loose any winter grim that might be lingering under there.

Next take a look at when your last oil change was. Your vehicles life blood is the oil, and after a long winter it will need to be changed. Always change your oil filter at the same time to make sure you are not getting any of that old oil back into the system. Consumer Auto Parts sells a variety of different oils and filters, so we are sure to have something that will work for you.

Lastly, give your cabin a complete cleaning. After trekking through the snow, sand, and salt, your floor mats will need a deep cleaning. Check under your seats for all that random garbage that is rolling around. Clean out your trunk, pull out your spare tire and verify that its pressure is okay. Use an upholstery cleaner on your seats, or a leather cleaner if required. Wipe down your dash, and clean out the cup holders. Now your interior is looking good, put in an air fresher, and now it is also smelling good.

It is best to winterize your vehicle before winter strikes. However since we are already in the middle of it, there is still time! Schedule a maintenance check-up for the vehicle’s tires and tire pressure, battery, belts and hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers and ignition system. Keep your gas tank sufficiently full – at least half a tank is recommended during the winter months. Depending upon where you drive, you may consider using winter tires to help keep your car under control.

Don’t try to stretch more miles from your tires during the winter months. If your tread depth is getting low, it can have serious effects on dry pavement, but those effects are multiplied in icy and snowy conditions. Taking the time to look over you vehicles tires can be the difference between a safe ride home, or a car accident.
